Real Estate Domain Name Research & Registration
Choosing a domain name for your website is one of the most important decisions you will make when planning and developing your internet presence. You probably have seen domains that other Realtors® have registered like: www.mycity-property-for-sale.org or www.mycity-mystate-real-estate.com. These type of "Descriptive Domains" use to gain you a boost in the search engine rankings: however this technique is no longer effective. While Descriptive Domains are, well, descriptive, their long term drawbacks are enough that you should stay away from them and try to find domain names that are shorter, more memorable and easier to type.
A Few Simple Real Estate Domain Name Rules:
- Avoid Misspelled Words
- Try and find a ".Com" domain first. Alternative domain extensions are ".Net", ".US" and lastly ".Org".
- Shorter domains are usually easier to remember, spell and type correctly.
- Try not to use "Realtor" or "Realtors" in your domain as the National Association of Realtors has placed limitations on these domains and how you may use them. Not following these limitations could cost you to forfeit your domain name.
- Stay away from numbers and words like "2/to/too" and "4/for/four" that have multiple spelling versions.
- Try to avoid characters and words that could be mistaken such as "and/&", "at/@" as well as "u/you; these terms could lead to confusion
The www.MrSmith.com option - Many real estate agents register their own name for their website domain. This is not a bad idea if you can still find your name available. If it is available, you should consider registering it even if you do not intend to use it. The main drawback with these types of domains is that they are not easily associated with your market, so unless you are a popular, well established real estate professional we generally do not recommend them.
Owning additional domain names and websites is a good way to limit future competition and to grow your Internet exposure in your local market.
